Agriculture in the Classroom

Farmers National Bank is proud to support Whiteside County Farm Bureau and Agriculture in the Classroom.

WHY TEACH ABOUT AGRICULTURE?

Agriculture is our county and state’s #1 industry. Today, we have more families living in towns and cities than in rural areas. The average person is three generations removed from the farm. Consequently, kids are disconnected from agriculture.

Today’s students are tomorrow’s consumers and decision-makers. We need a society that understands and appreciates our food and fiber system.

Farm Camp 2.0, is for kids ages 10-13 years old and focuses on STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics. Campers explore each discipline and its role on agriculture. They apply the four disciplines to solve issues facing agriculture. Campers have built bridges to learn about moving large, heavy farm equipment. They learned about the digestive system of ruminant animals by creating cow poop from potato chips and pop rocks. Then created and built manure spreaders to apply their fertilizer. Campers have explored soils, GPS technology, built levees along rivers, and so much more.
